"If you come from the hood, you start with a deficit"
Jeymes Samuels, director of “The Book of Clarence”
I don't love the phrase "the hood". I remember a time when I worked in advertising and a colleague pointed out the mansion block where I lived (and proudly owned my flat) in Kilburn to my boss when they were in a taxi together. (I wasn't in the cab on that occasion but it was a route we all took often as it was on the way back to the agency from one of our biggest clients). Apparently my boss said "Of course, Collette lives in the hood", whilst sniggering. A couple of my more sycophantic colleagues laughed along. My friend, said
"What do you mean, the hood? We have literally just driven past West Hampstead tube"
However, when I was told this story later in the day, I did, in fact, know exactly what he meant. Collette is Black and therefore she lives in a neighbourhood I think is undesirable.
